Entrepreneurship has always played a crucial role in fostering economic development, especially in countries facing instability and limited job opportunities. In Afghanistan, where access to formal employment is often constrained, small businesses and self-employment provide a vital path toward financial independence and community growth. Recognizing this, the Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) program, developed by the International Labour Organization (ILO), has been instrumental in equipping aspiring entrepreneurs and trainers with the necessary skills to start and grow sustainable businesses.
From November 30 to December 11, 2019, I had the opportunity to conduct an SIYB Training of Trainers (ToT) in Mazar-e-Sharif, alongside other SIYB Master Trainers. During this intensive 10 full-days program, we trained 15 potential SIYB trainers in the core methodologies and content of the SIYB program. This training was designed not only to enhance their understanding of business principles but also to prepare them to train future entrepreneurs effectively.
Out of the 15 participants, 11 successfully met the rigorous SIYB standards and received individual feedback to refine their skills. They are now on the path to conducting their own Training of Entrepreneurs (ToE) sessions, helping aspiring business owners develop the knowledge and confidence needed to launch and manage their ventures.
The significance of this initiative cannot be overstated. At a time when Afghanistan was grappling with economic challenges, fostering entrepreneurship was more critical than ever. By empowering local trainers, the SIYB program contributed to the creation of a ripple effect—helping individuals build sustainable livelihoods, generate employment, and drive economic progress in their communities.
This experience reaffirmed my belief in the power of structured business training and the resilience of Afghan entrepreneurs. I remain committed to supporting initiatives that enable individuals to take control of their economic future through education and entrepreneurship.
