The Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) program, developed by the International Labour Organization (ILO), has been instrumental in fostering entrepreneurship worldwide. In Afghanistan, where economic stability is uncertain, the SIYB program plays a vital role in equipping aspiring entrepreneurs and trainers with the skills needed to create sustainable businesses. The success of this program, however, relies heavily on the dedication and expertise of SIYB trainers, who serve as mentors and guides for future business owners.
On December 19, 2018, I had the privilege of being invited by esteemed SIYB Master Trainers, Mr. Julius Mutio (SIYB Master Trainer Developer) and Mr. Ben Ben Mwambela (SIYB Master Trainer), to speak at an SIYB Training of Trainers (ToT) session held at the Afghan-Korea Vocational Institute. This training was organized for the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, aiming to develop a new generation of SIYB trainers who could support Afghan entrepreneurs in launching and managing their businesses effectively.
During my motivational speech, I shared insights on the commitment, dedication, and continuous self-improvement required to become a successful SIYB trainer. Training entrepreneurs is not just about transferring knowledge—it’s about inspiring, mentoring, and empowering individuals to take charge of their economic future. I emphasized that an SIYB trainer must go beyond the curriculum, constantly adapting to the needs of entrepreneurs and helping them navigate the challenges of business ownership.
The role of SIYB trainers in Afghanistan is particularly crucial. With limited employment opportunities and a fragile economy, entrepreneurship offers a sustainable path toward financial independence. However, without proper training and guidance, many aspiring business owners struggle to turn their ideas into viable enterprises. This is why initiatives like the SIYB ToT program are essential in building a strong network of trainers who can equip entrepreneurs with practical skills and business acumen.
I extend my deepest gratitude to Mr. Julius Mutio and Mr. Ben Ben Mwambela for their dedication to the SIYB program and for the opportunity to contribute to this important training. Their leadership has helped shape countless trainers who, in turn, support the next generation of Afghan entrepreneurs.
The journey to becoming an SIYB trainer is demanding, but the impact it creates is immeasurable. I remain committed to supporting this mission and continuing to advocate for entrepreneurship as a pathway to economic resilience and empowerment.
