I’m excited to share my experiences from two distinct internship opportunities that have significantly enriched my professional journey: one with LIFE Initiative e.V. in Berlin and the other with the City of Kehl. Each provided unique insights and learning experiences, helping me grow both personally and professionally.
Internship with LIFE Initiative e.V. (December 2024 - February 2025)
My internship with LIFE Initiative e.V. was conducted remotely, which allowed me the flexibility to engage with clients and team members from various locations. During this time, I focused on providing support to individuals navigating bureaucratic challenges related to social services and integration. This role deepened my understanding of the complexities surrounding integration processes and highlighted the importance of effective communication in a virtual environment.
Working remotely also enhanced my ability to collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. I learned how to utilize digital tools to maintain engagement and provide essential services, ensuring clients received the support they needed, even from a distance.
Internship with the City of Kehl (June - August 2024)
In contrast, my internship with the City of Kehl was an in-person experience, allowing me to immerse myself in the local community and engage directly with residents. This role focused on facilitating the integration of newcomers and promoting community engagement. I had the opportunity to work closely with various stakeholders, enhancing my networking skills and reinforcing the importance of building relationships in fostering a sense of belonging.
Through direct interaction with residents, I gained insights into the challenges they face and the resources available to support their integration journey. This hands-on experience reinforced my commitment to promoting inclusivity and community support.
Key Learning Points
Adaptability in Different Environments: My remote internship taught me how to adjust my communication and support strategies for virtual interactions, while my in-person role emphasized the importance of personal connections.
Client-Centered Support: Both internships highlighted the importance of understanding client needs, whether through digital platforms or face-to-face engagement, enhancing my skills in empathy and active listening.
Team Collaboration: I experienced the dynamics of teamwork in both settings—remote collaboration at LIFE Initiative and direct cooperation with colleagues in Kehl, showcasing the value of diverse perspectives in achieving common goals.
Practical Skills Development: I gained valuable experience in community organizing and public relations, which are critical for effective integration work.
Cultural Sensitivity: Engaging with diverse populations in both internships highlighted the need for cultural awareness and responsiveness to ensure effective support.
My internships with LIFE Initiative e.V. and the City of Kehl have been instrumental in shaping my understanding of integration and community support. The contrasting experiences of remote and in-person work have equipped me with a diverse skill set and valuable insights. I am excited to apply what I have learned as I continue to contribute to fostering inclusivity and support within our communities.
